It’s been way too long!

12 12 2008

Okay okay, so I recognize that is has been way too long since I have last posted. I’ll just try and run through most of life as quick as can be.

First off, some pics: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2044895&l=95480&id=52904129

Today was our last day of classes, but it basically was an exam and a big party. I played guitar for everybody, completely last minute whim when I found out that Beck-san had brought his guitar. Everyone for the most part seemed to love it, which was awesome. I guess I was just glad that it was the kind of song that it was, a song about how awesome everyone is and how we need to hear that more often than we get to.

Let’s work backwards! Um, Ashley aka Kowado-san the Australian has become quite the friend, thanks to our frequent run ins at the subway station and my okasan loving her. Also, shes super awesome. I really really hope we keep up once we depart to our different hemispheres.

Man, plenty of awesome things have happened but typing them is just not satisfying at all. Most of you will be seeing me soon (I’m home in a week!) and you’ll just have to ask me about it then.

Also, super huge apologies to all who I just haven’t been keeping up with! Sorry!!!! Keeping in touch, even with the internet and technology and everything, is mega hard. I miss everyone, though. I’m going to hate hate hate leaving my homestay family but at the same time, I need to get back to the states pronto.

p.s. Jenny is getting married.

Long time no…read?

17 11 2008

So, sorry for the long hiatus of no blogging. Really, so so much has happened.

Um, this weekend I headed to the club here for the first time with some friends. It was a ton of fun. Its a huge self esteem boost too, because anyone of any remote color is treated like royalty by the Japanese, who base all they know of gaijin on commonly held stereotypes, haha. In general the Japanese just haven’t gotten a full hang of this dancing thing either, so it was nice to be in the upper tier of skill while dancing about.

Saturday my Okasan hosted this little party at our house, 4 of my gaijin friends came along, and we made bread and ate awesome food. By little party I mean the best day ever, by far the best time Ive had since coming to Japan. Japanese people know how to throw a party. Okasan’s best friend Kazuko showed up, and that woman is probably the funniest japanese woman Ive met yet. She has 3 cute boys too, especially the youngest, Hideki-kun who guessed Phil was 41 years old because of Phil’s beard. (Phil is 20, haha) Everyone came around 11 and most had evening plans but Asheley ended up staying for dinner as well and stayed till 10:30. So basically, it was 12 magical hours of happiness, unicorns and rainbows style.

Sunday was pretty chill, went to church. Got into a bit of a argument with Alvin Hart, who i both equally like and dislike at the same time. If it were last year I dont think Id be able to stand him, so I guess its a good testament to how Ive grown. But, the struggle that I still have with it is a testament to how far I still need to go. :-/

Um, im really swamped with school out of nowhere! weeks and weeks of you know, so-so busy schedule has quickly transformed into 3 projects due around the same time! waaaaah. But honestly, its still kind of a breeze in light of you know, any American college. Still, caught me off guard. Welp, until next time! Ill have more pics up soon too.

New Pictures and Fun Stories!

18 10 2008

Newest batch of pictures can be found here:

Takayama and etc.

As for that life has been chugging along, tons of fun, tons of fun. Today my homestay mom was asking if other Homestay-ing students were having any troubles with their respective families. I noted that a few people were, and was talking about how one friend and her homestay mom weren`t getting along very well (Amy). Okasan did the whole “ah, thats too bad” and then proceeded to tell me how everyone in my family LOVES me. Yaaaay!

I wasn`t sure what the best response was because, as most people can easily tell, I LOVE MY HOMESTAY FAMILY. But you know, I don`t want to overwhelm them with this fact. I basically mumbled out a 私がうれしいだ。。。 (I`m happy!) and a Luckyだと思う。。。 (I think I`m lucky!) so I think they undestood. But then my homestay mom asks me which out of the 4 of them I like the most! Like, as I`m sitting in a room with all of them. At first I figured I just misheard, as this whole convo was in Japanese. But yeah, no she repeated it again. Haha! So I kind of mumbled out Okasan, because that woman is of course my fav. It was a toughie though cuz i love them alllllllll. Daiki-kun is a step below though, probably. ;-)

In retrospect, maybe i should have said i love you all equally! Or something. Stupid tricky japanese and the intricasies of culture and language! Fun times, though.

Takayama!

13 10 2008

Joanna has been really getting on me to update this thing, which is good. I`ve realized as of late that I really do depend on my friends to push me in various directions. Once I make a decision I just run with it headstrong-like, but the major problem is making an actual decision. Anyyyyyways…

This weekend was Takayama! yay! IES, a group of like 30 American students here, headed up to see some sweet areas of Japan. I`ll have pictures and a link to my facebook up soon, hopefully tomorrow. The area was really beautiful, but I feel like I should just let the pictures do the talking. Its only been 6 weeks really, but I feel close with a good number of kids here (shout out to all you guyz, you know who you are :-D )

This week is midterms and I can`t concentrate for anything! Today was just a joke, really, it was all review and i couldn`t keep my head in the game. Who schedules a field trip right before midterms!?!? However, I`m really not afraid of the exams, I`ve been really on the ball in terms of school all semester. When we were testing into classes I thought I would be that kid who just barely made it into 1J400.  But as it turns out I feel quite at home at this level, I`m being pushed and its not breezy, but its not impossibly hard either. And I`ve learned so much! My listening especially has improved immensely. I can understand a lot more around the house at home, too.

Today is chill and tomorrow will probably be amaaaazing. I have my oral exam but its only you know, a good 10 min or so I think, and so the rest of the day I will be free. I mean, Ill be studying, but I can put that free time to other good uses.

Kaley send me a email that was particularly awesome of her, and as a sidenote she mentioned how she`ll probably be doing a 6 month internship at IHOP in Kansas City. And no, not the pancake place. International House of Prayer, that IHOP. She then mentioned summer internships…hmm. I need to figure out my classes for next semester as well within in the next week or so. Oh! And I`ve received my absentee ballot and I`m going to send that in in maybe a week or so. Basically what I`m saying is out of nowhere i feel like there are some decisions I have to make, and soon.

That`s all for today kids. I`ll probably update tomorrow as well, if I`m up for it.

October!

3 10 2008

Soooo its been way too long since I last posted.

Some highlights: I saw Mamma Mia in Japan…in JAPANESE! It was incredible. It was like fulfilling a dream I never realized I had in the first place.  The songs were in Japanese too. The best part was that I was really able to follow along, and really understood alot of the Japanese.

I just found out that Olympic Gold Medalist Hammer Thrower Koji Murofushi went to school at a college directly next to Nanzan (where I am studying) and he is currently there now doing graduate school I think and teaching Hammer. YOU GUYZ! I walk past this school periodically! I hang out in the area that the college is located all the time! Maybe I`ve passed him on the subway and NEVER KNEW. 会いたい! I want to meet him hardcore!!!

Um, I`ve learned that my homestay siblings are cool just really shy, and coupled with my shyness there is just alot of silence to go around. Yesterday I was just in a good mood and little more willing to make a fool of myself, so I talked to my homestay sister, and she responded like whoa. So now Im going to make more of an effort to talk to her and Daiki-kun.

School is going well, yesterday we had to give a speech in front of everyone. I had it down cold but whenever I get up in front of people I get the adrenaline rush and I was basically just shaking the whole time. Ive been doing well on quizzes and everything, definitely improving. I wonder where Ill be after 3 more months!

I went to the Japanese Christian club on campus! Twas fun, and it looks like Ill finally be getting to church this weekend. Yay!

Oh, and I must mention my cool friends here. So shout out to Joanna, Phil, Lisa, Amy, and you know, everyone else. I need to start recording our many adventures here!

Yankees Cap

15 09 2008

So things have been moving along in Japan, this Friday the regular japanese students come back from their break, and so at that point I feel as though the real week begins. It`s good to get into the groove of things as well.

This past weekend the IES group (30 of American Students) went to Kanazawa, which is a really sweet place. We checked out this temple/house thing that is basically referred to as the Ninja House, not because Ninjas ever used it but because it has all these crazy trap doors and hidden rooms and etc. It looks like 2 floors from the outside but is actually 4 floors. Crazy stuff. Then we went to this area where they make gold leaf, its the location where like 98% of the world`s gold leaf is created. Gold leaf is real gold pounded into thin thin thin sheets, like 1/10,000 of a millimeter, or maybe thinner. I made this cool box thing using REAL GOLD w00t, but it kind of sucked because my design was cool but handling the stuff is obviously difficult due to its thinness.

That night we stayed at the cooooolest Japanese inn yet, it had 3!!! onsen! Onsen = public bathing. I had my first try of it at Inuyama and let me say, Japan has something here. Its basically amazingly scorchingly hot water that you and a bunch of your friends go into naked. Sooooo relaxing. Im basically addicted to now. Its also a pretty good estimate of where my self esteem is now too, seeing that I now have no problem getting naked in front of friends and strangers alike, when it comes to an onsen. Me and my Inn roomies went to all 3, including one that was co-ed. Don`t worry, for that one we wore these like bib-towel things. They actually covered more of the body than say, a bikini.

All in all the trip was a blast. I`m getting sick of talking in english though, now that im in japan, so I`m kind of glad its the last field trip for a while. Class is starting up and gosh darn it, I want to be able to carry out my end of a conversation by the time I go home. Reading, writing, listening all seem to be rather good but then speaking is just blah. Unfortunately the solution for that seems to be…speaking. Even when I sound like an idiot when I try to speak, gotta push on through.

Yesterday I came home rather late, our bus hit some traffic. However, i totally had this awesome moment! My homestay brother, who is 16, was actually floating around the house tonight as opposed to being out and about like he usually is. Hes very typical japanese teenager right now I think. Anyways, because hes never around its kind of obvious that I have a much better relationship with my Okasan, little sis (imoto) and Otosan. Hes also shyer than the rest, and Im kind of shy in these situations, so whereas my okasan initiates conversation and I loosen up, whenever Daiki is around Im just kind of awkward. I want to talk to him, but i never say anything. I get the feeling maybe he is bit shy and awkward about it too.

Anyways, last night we did have the briefest of conversations, lots of nodding and smiles and I gave him more eye contact than usual I guess, because in my awkward moments i totally avert the eyes. Anyways, he went off somewhere and comes back 5 minutes later and is donning the NY Yankees ballcap that i brought for him for an omiyage (souvenior/gift), which is the first time I`ve seen him put it on since I gave out the gifts when I first arrived. Guys this is big in japan speak. He played around with it in the mirror for a while and then took it off and left after only a few minutes, but I was like OMG HE LIKES/ACCEPTS ME interally. Outward of course I just smiled and nodded along with Kiko-chan. But this was like, a bonding moment japan-style. I bet a bunch of people back home are going to be like “you are reading way into this” but my other ryugakusei exchange students can attest to it!

My homestay family is so schweeeet. There was this sort of “youve been gone a day we missed you!” feeling when I got back from the trip. It was nice :-D
